The brief
Hacking a selected product from the IKEA catalog by giving it a whole new function with as few changes as possible… This was the ambitious theme of Lecturer Eddy Antonello, who as part of the Basic Design course assigned the 1st year students of Scuola Italiana Design.
The project aims to stimulate creative thinking by looking at objects not because of what we are used to seeing or how we use them but by trying to understand their physical essence in order to completely transform it into an object with a whole new function.
Tinkering techniques applied to design, help students in the design maturation process by giving them new tools to interpret the world around them. This method is fundamental and will be applied transversally to the projects that follow over the next 2 years.
Projects - Stool
Starting from the Ikea wooden wall clock, with the addition of three plywood legs, the clock became the seat.

Projects - Magazine rack
Starting with Ikea’s Nesna nightstand, it was modified to become a magazine rack.

Projects - Lamp with Adjustable Light Intensity
Starting with the Ikornnes mirror, a lamp stand was created that allows the light intensity to be adjusted manually.

Projects - Cirkustält Backpack
Starting with the Cirkustält Tent, a children’s play tent, the fabric was modified to create a backpack.

Projects - Table Hockey
Starting with the Ikornness mirror, it was emptied of its function as a mirror to accommodate a stand for Table Hockey.

Projects - Swivel
Starting from the Bekväm ladder/stool, a mobile baby walker was created.
