Brief
Design of a 50 x H 70 cm vertical flag, containing a novel design of a symbol or coat of arms representing a new version of the official flag, telling the story of the latter’s role in terms of global environmental impact.
The symbol represents the paradigm of a national primacy that, in paradoxical and provocative terms, boasts a new achievement. The new flag tells the other side of a country and indirectly the result of political, economic and widespread lifestyle choices in need of rapid change.
The nation’s values are told through tangible (negative)data by tracing a new identity. The project consists of the creation of highly stylized iconographic images that represent by visual analogy very simple objects or concepts. It is essential to base the symbol design on a geometric construction using appropriately designed forms and grids. It is the same process as the design of a brand, except that the symbol is not tied to a brand and should not communicate “propagandistic” messages.

Background
Noise pollution is unwanted or excessive sound that can produce adverse effects on human health and the quality of the surrounding environment. It represents one of the most serious (and underestimated) environmental problems because of its high and widespread impact on the population. It consists of disturbing noise, with harmful effects on human activity and health. Noise pollution is often generated within industrial facilities, but it is also produced by busy roads, railways, airports and construction activities. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), noise pollution is one of the highest environmental impact problems after air pollution.
Message
Silk, now in the West thanks to the ancient trade between Byzantium and the East that took place along the Silk Road, is meant to symbolize the continuing struggle for hegemony and power. In fact, Emperor Justinian, sent two monks to the East so that they could seize , at the risk of their lives, the secret of silk making, going on to end the Chinese hegemony of the manufacture of this fabric. This continuous cycle of power grabs and struggles is shown and at the same time concealed, by the Ouroboros, transformed into a Chinese dragon instead of a snake. It originally symbolizes eternity, cyclical time, eternal return, immortality and perfection. In this flag, however, it wants to become a metaphor for the ‘increasingly oppressive anthropocene and the now unsustainable lifestyle of the ‘children of the dragon.’ Most of the noise pollution is caused by Metallic processing in factories, so the wind chimes will be made of metallic material.

We made the dragon illustration using adobe illustrator software. Taking advantage of
the Pixar painting site, we printed our flag 35cm x 50cm. On the end we sewed brass pipes and bells.
