Axolight, a new light - SID

The company

Axolight is one of the most important made-in-Italy brands that has been signing lighting design products for over twenty years, technologically advanced lamps that perfectly combine aesthetic and functional value.

The company collaborates with top names in the international design world such as Karim Rashid, Ryosuke Fukusada, Dima Loginoff and Rainer Mutsch among others.

Their extensive collection of lamps includes pendant, wall and ceiling, table, floor and recessed lamps… but one of the most important features of this brand is tailoring designs with the goal of enhancing environments to the fullest through light.

Brief

This year, after the success of the project developed with the 3rd year students of the Product Design and Communication course of Scuola Italiana Design for Euroluce, Axolight, this time uses a group selected from the best students to develop a project related to new technologies applied to light.

The use of new materials and the connection with cutting-edge technologies has always guided the company in the development of its models, and this time as well, it wanted to involve our students in the exploration of new application scenarios.

The working group was coordinated by Cesar Arroyo, Lecturer and Head of R&D area Design of Galileo Visionary District, Alberico Purgato and Chiarajenny Dellomonaco assistants in Product Design courses of Scuola Italiana Design.

The projects

OM
Represents the minimalist style that embraces silence. 2 concentric structures of calendered and bent aluminum support a light, transparent fabric that can dampen ambient noise. The sound-absorbing fabric is stretched in the gap created by the structure. With an absorption coefficient of 0.8, the fabric provides lightness and visual elegance to the composition.

BLOW
It is lightness, the breath of wind that awakens light. It features a series of polycarbonate stems characterized by the aesthetic micro-etched made by laser engraving technique. The stems are connected to a core that contains the light source and once inserted into the appropriate housings through a simple plug&play joint, they are illuminated thanks to the transmission of light through the material.

The faceted central bulb in turn enriches the effect by adding a series of golden reflections due to its finish.

TAPE
Expresses surprise, suspension … contact. A lamp capable of lighting up as if by magic once leaning on the tape that draws the external outline of the product in the air. Such can accommodate a sound-absorbing panel made of recycled felt giving room for customization of environment thanks to material and color combinations.

QUIET
Represents stillness, harmony, silence. A system of lamps integrated on sound-absorbing supports, they evoke the feeling of peace and tranquility through surface designs inspired by nature and Zen philosophy.

A sound-absorbing felt panel made from recycled PET lights up by showing surface patterns. Power comes from a fabric-covered wire that then becomes the hem that characterizes the horizontal cut at the light source.

ABSENCE
It is the paradox of illusion — light that is not there. This project wants to disappear completely into the environment by becoming invisible to create the illusion of an optical pattern suspended in mid-air.

The microled lighting system powered by a conductive coating inserted on 2 sheets of glass creates the light sources. The light then propagates on the slab thanks to the micro-incisions made on the outer surface invisible when the light is off, thus creating highly distinctive geometric patterns.
