List of topics covered:

The course explores the connections between sociology, anthropology and design, analyzing how design practices can draw on an in-depth understanding of human cultures and behaviors. Particular attention will be paid to the use of ethnographic research and Future Studies to identify evolving trends in design and the ways in which people interact collectively with objects. The interdisciplinary approach integrates disciplines such as marketing, semiotics, psychology and communication to provide a comprehensive view of the cultural and social impact of design.

Course-specific learning objectives:

The course aims to provide analytical tools for understanding the sociocultural context in which a design intervention takes place and assessing the dynamic nature of the cultural processes that influence it. Students will develop skills in ethnographic research applied to design, analysis of market trends and understanding consumption patterns. Upon completion, they will be able to integrate a social-anthropological approach into design, identifying evolutionary scenarios and intervention strategies.

Mode of teaching delivery:

Lectures will alternate between theoretical moments, participatory discussions and practical exercises. Students will be involved in group work and business games to experiment with applications of the concepts studied in real project contexts. The continuous discussion and dialogic approach will facilitate the development of critical thinking and synthesis skills.

Mode of examination/evaluation:

The final exam will consist of the production and presentation of a paper, designed to test mastery of the subject and the ability to apply the concepts covered in an original way. Clarity of exposition, depth of analysis and originality of design approach will be evaluated.
