Course:
ISSC/01 History and Culture of Design
Year:
2024/2025
Lecturer:
Eugenio Farina
Assistant:
Chiara Grandesso
List of topics covered:
The course explores the historical and cultural dynamics that have influenced the evolution of industrial design, analyzing social, aesthetic and production transformations from the 15th century to the present day. The teaching approach does not follow a linear chronology, but is divided into Thematic Areas that allow for comparative understanding between past and present. Students will analyze the role of visual communication, the connections between art movements and design, and the influences of the socio-economic context on design. Case studies of iconic designs will be examined, highlighting the interdependencies between aesthetics, technology and the marketplace.
Course-specific learning objectives:
The course aims to develop a critical awareness of design history, providing students with tools to interpret contemporary design through the lens of the past. The investigation of visual communication, design methodologies and the evolution of taste will help students understand the value of design as a cultural and strategic expression. The training will lead them to recognize the relationship between form, function and social context, stimulating analytical skills and informed design approaches.
Mode of teaching delivery:
The course combines lectures with analysis of audiovisual materials and case studies, integrating comparisons between different eras and movements. Through thematic discussions and interdisciplinary insights, students will be encouraged to develop critical thinking and connect historical principles with current design practices. The use of concrete examples and classroom interaction will foster a dynamic and applied understanding of the subject.
Mode of examination/evaluation:
The final exam involves the creation of a synoptic diagram in Flow Chart form, accompanied by documentary images, to demonstrate the ability to analyze and synthesize the topics covered. A written test is also scheduled to test theoretical understanding of course content and the ability to apply historical concepts to contemporary design.
