ISSC/01 Storia e Cultura del Design

List of topics covered:

This course explores the evolution of industrial design through a critical analysis of the socio-economic and cultural transformations that have marked its development. The study of the history of visual communication is interwoven with an understanding of the dynamics of taste and aesthetics, from the origins of typography to the most recent developments in contemporary design. The teaching approach is structured in Thematic Areas, allowing a synchronic view of historical events, rather than a simple chronological scanning. Students will be guided to make connections between past and present, developing a critical understanding of historical influences in current design.

Course-specific learning objectives:

The objective of the course is to provide a thorough understanding of the roots of design and visual communication, promoting a critical awareness of the relationships between form, language and society. Students will acquire tools for historical and stylistic analysis, developing the ability to recognize influences from the past in contemporary design processes. Particular attention will be paid to the relationship between design and technological innovation, as well as the cultural and social impact of design practices.

Mode of teaching delivery:

Teaching will include lectures supplemented with audiovisual materials, case studies and comparative analyses of different design eras and movements. Interdisciplinary insights will be offered, ranging from visual design to typography, film to music, literature to performance art. Classroom interaction and participation in thematic discussions will enable students to develop a critical and informed outlook.

Mode of examination/evaluation:

The final exam involves the creation of a synoptic diagram organized in the form of a Flow Chart, enriched with images and documentary references, demonstrating the ability to synthesize and connect the different topics covered. A written test is also scheduled to test theoretical understanding of the course content.
