Course:
ISDR/03 Techniques of Design Representation and Communication.
Year:
2024/2025
Lecturer:
Luca Ferigo
List of topics covered:
This course provides the essential skills for project representation and communication in the context of industrial design. Through a theoretical-practical course, students will master physical and digital modeling techniques, learning how to translate a design idea into a concrete model. Materials, tools and methodologies for creating mockups and prototypes will be explored, with a special focus on woodworking, plastics and thermoforming techniques.
Course-specific learning objectives:
The course aims to develop the ability to analyze, decompose and reproduce an object through pattern making. Students will learn to interpret technical drawings and visual references, select appropriate materials and apply working processes consistent with design requirements. At the end of the course, they will be able to make prototypes to verify the feasibility of a product and hone their manual and analytical skills in building physical models.
Mode of teaching delivery:
Classes include a theoretical introduction followed by hands-on laboratory exercises. Students will work independently under the supervision of the instructor, progressively tackling technical challenges of increasing complexity. Periodic reviews will allow them to refine design skills and improve the executive quality of the models produced.
Mode of examination/evaluation:
Assessment will be based on midterm tests and the final group project. Key elements such as technical accuracy, quality of implementation, ability to solve design problems, and clarity in the presentation of work done will be considered. Accuracy in the application of techniques learned and the ability to develop alternative technical solutions will also be assessed.
