Course:
ISDC/01 Communication Sciences
Year:
2024/2025
Lecturer:
Andrea Busato
List of topics covered:
Introduction to design tools: from pencil to generative AI
Structure and operation of generative AI in the context of design
The four levels of AI-mediated design knowledge:
Artifacts (tangible outputs: sketches, 3D models, digital works)
Intuition (pattern learning and stylistic recognition)
Explicit representations (descriptions to interface with AI)
Transferable concepts (abstraction ability and human teaching)
The role of the designer in the AI era: designer or curator of creativity?
Evolutionary creativity: variation and selection as a design method
AI sensory metaphor: eyes, ears, hands, brain, heart
Analysis of case studies and experimental research projects
Course-specific learning objectives:
Understand the operation and applicability of Generative AI in design
Develop a critical approach to co-creation between AI and designers
Experiment with the method of evolutionary creativity through variation and selection
Exploring the ethical and conceptual implications of using AI in creative processes
Apply Generative AI tools to produce innovative outputs
Mode of teaching delivery:
Lectures on theoretical principles and case studies
Practical exercises with generative AI tools
Group projects based on creative experimentation with AI
Final exhibition with interactive installations made by students
Mode of examination/evaluation:
– Final project (60%): development of a design concept that integrates generative AI
– Written report (20%): critical analysis of the experience with AI in the project
– Active participation in tutorials and workshops (20%)
